If you are like the millions of webmasters all over the internet, you may have spent $1,000's in trying to create exposure and generate traffic for your website. Only to find out that it did not work and money down the drain. Well while some of these traffic generating schemes will work, it will not help at all if you do not have an interesting and attractive website. Therefore, when you are looking to gain traffic you should closely analyze your own website prior to implementing any other traffic generating efforts.
A webmaster, has to realize who their customers are or will be. You have to know whom you are trying to target before you can gain traffic. If you are spending a great deal of money on advertisement, but not seeing any results, you could be targeting the wrong audience. For example, let us say you are selling Women's Clothing. Well, if you are advertising on a site that is geared towards men, no you will not be generating much traffic or sales. If you have a website that is based on game memberships and you are advertising on a website geared toward people 30-50 years old. No you will not generate traffic or memberships. You have to know who your target audience is, what ages they would be, what gender, and sometimes what geographical location.
Free Advertisement
When you are looking for free advertisement such as Banner Exchanges you will want to pinpoint sites that target the audience you are looking for. For example, if you are wanting to target middle-aged women try advertising on websites such as gardening, parenting, work at home, specific An important rule is to steer clear of websites that have nothing in common with your own or clearly attracts visitors that would not find your website useful.
Banner exchanges are free and easy to use. You simply create an attractive and attention grabbing banner (you can do this yourself with the right programs, ask a friend to help you, or hire a professional for very little money) and place it on the banner exchange website. What will then happen is that you will be required to place a code on your website, which will display other people's banners in rotation. This is why it is called a banner exchange; you are essentially exchanging banners with another person or persons.
Link Exchanges
The same general idea applies for link exchanges. Choose websites that have something in common with your own. If you are placing your link in a directory, make sure you place it in the proper category. Make sure you come up with a catchy title and description to attract the attention of the user. Many people use link directories to help them find exactly what they are looking for, because of the ease in using the categories.

Overall, no matter what form of traffic generation you choose to use for your website, make sure you are targeting the right audience. Analyze your website and make sure that if you were the average visitor that you would visit the website. It is an important aspect in traffic generation that you ensure you have something the visitor wants, make them need it, and ultimately buy it.
