Long Underwear: Using What Works

by Victor Epand

Long underwear probably ranks in the top 5 percent of the most unattractive clothes in the world. Of course, since long underwear is designed to be worn underneath other garments and help keep the wearer from freezing to death, whether or not it makes that same wearer look good is immaterial. Long underwear is very important for outdoor activities, such as skiing and snowboarding, and all cold weather athletes should own at least one set of long underwear.

The predecessor of long underwear was the union suit, an article of clothing originally designed for women during the 19th century. At the time, it was a very liberating piece of clothing, as women's undergarments had previously been extremely constricting. However, the ability of the union suit to keep the wearer warm gave the garment cross gender appeal, and it soon gained popularity with men. A union suit was a single piece of clothing that covered the entire body. It was usually made from red flannel and had a panel at the buttocks that could be opened in order that the wearer might relieve him or herself.

Today, the single piece union suit has been replaced an upper and lower garment, which are collectively known as long underwear. The main advantage of long underwear is that the wearer can chose to wear only the upper or lower garment, depending on the application. However, the purpose of long underwear is exactly the same as that of the union suit: to keep the wearer warm. It does this by transporting perspiration away from the skin and adding a layer of insulation. Long underwear is often made from cotton or a cotton-polyester blend. Some critics warn against long underwear made from cotton, as that fabric has little if any ability to insulate. This critique is valid, although cotton long underwear still helps to deal with perspiration.

Some newer long underwear is made from polypropylene, a thermoplastic polymer. Polypropylene will keep you warm and dry and is a very affordable option. However, this material does not actually wick moisture away from the body. Rather, the heat of the body forces moisture vapor through the polypropylene. In order for this kind of long underwear to be effective, a wool or fleece layer should be worn on top. Such a garment will wick the moisture away from the skin.

There are a number of variants on the basic principle of long underwear. Thermal underwear, for example, is the same in appearance, but it is made from two-ply fabric, which uses trapped body heat to insulate the wearer against cold air. Other kinds of long underwear utilize specially treated polyesters that, thanks to a certain chemical process, encourage moisture to migrate through the fabric to the outer surface where it can evaporate.

As a general rule, long underwear should not be so tight as to constrict movement. However, in order to function properly, it needs to be formfitting enough to wick away any perspiration. In other words, it needs to touch your skin as much as possible.
